What is the difference between a fountain pen, a rollerball and a ballpoint?

A fountain pen feeds liquid ink from a cartridge, converter or piston through a metal nib and gives the most character to handwriting. A rollerball uses water-based ink in a refill for a smooth, wet line with no nib to care for. A ballpoint uses thicker oil-based ink, dries instantly and is the most practical for everyday notes.

What does 'precious resin' mean on a Montblanc pen?

Precious resin is the name Montblanc uses for the high-quality polymer that forms the barrel and cap of pens such as the Meisterstück. It is durable and has a deep, polished finish. It is not a precious metal, so the value of the pen comes from the maker, model and condition rather than the material.

Are the lighters shipped with fuel?

No. Gas and petrol cannot be sent through the post, so lighters travel empty. Butane lighters such as S.T. Dupont or Cartier models need the correct refill gas for that make, and petrol lighters such as Zippo take lighter fluid. Check the description for the fuel type and for whether the lighter is marked as in working order.

How should I care for a vintage fountain pen?

Flush the pen with lukewarm water before first use, then fill it with a quality bottled ink. Avoid pigmented or shimmer inks in vintage pens unless you know the filling system can handle them. Store pens upright or flat, and clean them every few weeks if they are not used, so ink does not dry in the feed.
